my organization is in a position where we are cutting costs and i have been asked for some input. where are your companies cutting costs? where are you finding good places to save money? are there any costs that you initially overlooked but you are saving with now? thanks for the input!!

Although I find it funny that the CEO of our organization thinks that recycling and being 'green' is a hoax - I've managed to do some cost cutting in these areas.
For example: shredding People were throwing anything and everything into the shredding bins - and we were paying big bucks to essentially shred trash! Now the rule is ONLY highly confidential documents are put in the bins -- and our shredding costs are 1/3 what they were!
Another example is for people to use what is in the supply closet - we accumulated stuff from two offices that were closed in the recent cutbacks -- and I'm not ordering anything until those supplies are used - just because a box of file folders is open doesn't mean we need to buy a new box - some people can be very wasteful! Also we eliminated all these 'special orders' that people had -- seems they wanted only a certain very costly type of TYVEK mailing envelope - when the normal paper type would do just as well - saved a few $$ in that area.
I flat out told all my vendors that I needed better pricing - and they all came through with some rather nice reductions in price - so you never know until you ask!
It is a matter of paying attention to a lot of 'little' things - and eventually you find you ARE saving $$$

Right. I feel like we have already picked the low hanging fruit- catering, supplies, etc. I have pushed for the cell phones but no one wants to give them up and, instead, are considering iPhones over blackberries. We have also. When able to renegotiate contracts but are still faced with an operating expense over 4% which is insane. Reductions in force are looking like the next step-again- but would much rather find another avenue. Thanks for the input! I'm going to try to get cell phones back on the table.

A few things I have seen that are cut when budgets are tight are company paid cell phones, catering orders, overtime, anything extra or above and beyond. My organization challenged our employees to find every way they could to cut costs and/or reduce waste. We were able to come out of the red and did not have to conduct any layoffs.
