Help! I'm being assigned to manage an existing listserv for an affiliated organization (not mine). I don't know the first thing about listservs. Can anybody point me to some good how-tos?

Hi. I understand what your frustration is. I didn't know either since I've never had the privilege of utilizing one. But you know, I read the Charlet's response and I was very curious. I searched on listserv and found this website, which I think you may find helpful. http://www.listserv.va.gov/

I mean I LITERALLY don't know anything about listservs. How does it work? What, exactly, am I supposed to do?

Hi Patrick! Each listserv can be different. Some are moderated; that is where you monitor the flow of the discussions and provide topics for the participants to discuss. You also have open listservs where the participants discuss topics amongst themselves. I am the moderator for a listserv here at my organization. I post topics each week for the participants to discuss. One of the most important things that I can suggest to you is to make sure that you establish rules and ettiquette for your listserv. You can find some great tips on the ASAE website or by Googling "listserv ettiquette" for some good examples. Also, be sure to include the option to "opt out" of the listserv for your participants. I hope this helps a little. Good luck! :)
