I think that as long as you have a receptive supervisor and a management team that is not threatened by suggestions from "lower pay grade employees" you will find that your suggestions are listened to and taken as worthwhile. It's about respect and team work. If I am not part of the equation, my department does not perform as well as if I am a part of the group and every member of the group has a say in the decisions that are made. If you have made a highly successful suggestion, make sure to report that on your next performance evaluation - get it in writing and toot your own horn. DeDe on 6/9/2009 1:33:24 PM
I've been with the same firm for almost 11 years, and I've made many suggestions that were used and were successful. We've been upgrading our color printers on a regular basis because I kept lobbying for a high speed color printer instead of a bunch of little inkjets. In the long run, we've saved time and money and are turning out a better looking product. I also pushed for double sided printing to save paper and it took a while, but now it's SOP. We used to print on expensive bond paper with our company name on it. I found a way to add our company name to the bottom of every page in Adobe, eliminating the need for expensive custom paper. Now this may sound like a simple thing since Adobe allows annotations, but those can be turned off at printing. The plug-in I found doesn't allow the recipient to print without our name on the page. So we went from $38/ream paper to $5/ream paper. Since one of the biggest parts of my job involve getting our reports out to clients, that what most of my suggestions have been about. We produce reports that involve multiple excel and word files and would take hours sometimes to put together in Adobe. I had the idea of a print macro that would assemble the whole report for us. It's one idea I had to rely on others to implement as I know nothing about Visual Basic, but we now have our print macro which saves hours of time and allows anyone to put a report together for emailing. There have been others over the years, but these are the ones that come to mind right now. Cheryl Stavis on 6/9/2009 1:18:15 PM
