Hi all. We are hosting a finance V.P. meeting and I need ideas on an activity we can do during the cocktail/dinner time. Last year we did a murder mystery, which was lots of fun. This is a slightly "boring" group, so I would like to spice it up a little! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

If you need a great ice breaker activity to get everyone up and circulating, this is fun and works well.
Place a small item in a brown lunch bag.
Attach to a piece of string or yarn long enough to slip over the head of the participant. I do this by folding the bag over the yarn and then stapling the bag to itself.
You will need one bag for each attendee.
Items to be placed in the bag can be such things as a pen, toothpick, small bar of soap, birthday candle, cassette tape, emery board, rubber band, small tube of toothpaste, etc. Be creative, but keep it small.
Number each bag.
Create a numbered answer sheet that matches the numbers on the bags. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and so forth.)
As the participants arrive, place a numbered bag around their neck and give them an answer sheet.
The purpose of the activity is so that each participant will circulate around the room and speak with one another as they try to guess what is in each others bags and write the guess on the answer sheet matching the number on the bag with the number on the answer sheet. The participants may touch the bag and try to guess by feel what is in the bag.
Obviously the person with the most correct answer wins. You can decide what the prize is. Since this is a Finance meeting, you can decorate the bags with money or dollar signs graphics if desired. Be creative and get them moving.
Hope this helps.

Contact a group that does "old west" photos - they will bring in costumes and set up a photo back-drop. People can choose the outfits they want to wear (like cowboy attire, goucho, women's bonnets, etc) and will bring props - like fans, bags of money, bow and arrow, etc) and get their picture taken. Usually leads to funny group shots and for our group, I have a lot of pictures of our senior male executives in drag. What a hoot!

One thing I suggested for our office Christmas party last year was a huge sucess and I think you will all find it fun too. Print up some sticky labels with a different famous person's name on each one, i.e. Marilyn Monroe, Queen Elizabeth II, The Pope, Frank Sinatra, President Obama, Oprah, Tom Cruise, Bill Gates, Sophia Loren, Tiger Woods, etc. and stick it to the back of each person without them seeing the name. Then they have to ask the other folks who they are, by asking such questions as "Am I male, am I alive, am I rich, am I American, am I on TV". They can only ask one direct question, not "am I black or white." The other person may only answer with a yes or a no, not give any hints like "you're young and sexy!" As each person guesses who they are, they can choose from a trayful of candy or small prizes from the dollar store. (You can put female names on male's backs and vice versa which adds to the fun.) It's funny, cheap and very entertaining!

Do a wine tasting during cocktail time, then throw karaoke at them - the wine should loosen them up, then the fun can begin.
I did a sales meeting one year, we had a wine tasting with dinner and then did something similar and it was a blast.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

We recently had a function and did a "Night at the Races" it was a lot of fun. Everyone - including the 'boring' finance people had a great time!
A company called TPA (they are nationwide) set this up, you can call Kate Chandler here in Chicago to find out what number to call for your area Kate is at 312-446-9244. Good luck!

If you have enough time, get baby (or as a very young child) pictures of the group (or as many as you can), post them on a board and the one who guesses the identity of most of the photos wins a small prize.
