My company is, unfortunately, going through the same problems as others today and the following word has caused a lot of discussion. When typing a sentence such as: Five people were (laid off or layed off) last week. Which is correct? I have seen this word typed so many different ways I am confused. Dee

Another phrase that is commonly used by Human Resources professionals to describe someone who has been laid off is: "Reduction in Force" or RIF.

Or you could use the current "buzz word" -- Right Sized.

According to my dictionary and a grammar site I check on the Internet, layed is not a word; therefore, the correct term would be laid off.
