My boss of 4.5 years is moving on to another organization and I'd really like to buy her a nice going-away gift but I'm not sure what to buy. As I said, we've worked together for 4.5 years and I really like her; she's been a great mentor and manager. She has pretty expensive taste although I don't think she'd expect me to buy her something so expensive. Still, I want to buy her something nice. Any suggestions? I'm stumped! I'd appreciate any help. Thanks! :)

i would suggestion a paperweight which she could treasure and use on her desk for the new position - i have two special items on my desk from past friends that i have taken with me over the years to different positions and it always makes me smile to remember them whenever I look at the statute...................hope you have taken pics of both of you for your album so that you can look back and remember her!!!

I had two unusual potted plants in my office that had beautiful deep purple blooms on them which my former manager admired very much the whole time she worked with me. When she left, I gave her one of the plants and she was so excited about having it. A year after she left, she e-mailed me a picture of the flower blooming and told me that each time she sees the plant she thinks of me. I told her mine other plant had died and she even rooted me a piece of it and is sending the new plant back to me. You might have something your boss has admired and could give to them as a reminder of who you were. I hope this helps you.

What about an art glass paperweight. Something really nice like Murano or handblown glass if she likes nice things. You can often find beautiful ones in museum giftshops or online. Here's a link to some examples. She could keep on her desk and would think of you every time she looked at it:

I agree with the suggestion for a nice item from Things Remembered, i.e., desk clock or pen set or perhaps a donation to your boss's favorite charitable organization if you know what it might be. A hand-written note thanking her for her mentoring would also be very nice.

I would give her something engraved from the shop Things Remembered. They have an assortment of options.

Thanks, everyone! These are awesome ideas! Your posts made me think of some things I know she really likes and I have a number of ideas now that I can use to put together a great gift. I especially like the ideas of sending flowers to arrive on her first day so I'm definitely going to do that. Thanks again!!!

It is the sentiment that counts. Perhaps take a picture of those she worked closest with, you included, and put in a complementary frame.
It is a very thoughtful gift.

Does she collect items such as Willow Tree figurines, Boyds Bears, Precious Moments or some other specific item of interest? Perhaps something like that commemorating her position would be a remembrance she could keep.

Are you good at any crafts--the classy kind--you could make her something. Or maybe there's a shop that sells good quality crafts that you could give a gift certificate for. I like the idea of a card and flowers at her new job. You can say how much you appreciated her, and support her move.

You said she has been like a mentor to you. Successories (www.successories.com) has lots of motivational type items. Why not buy her something that applies to a mentor or mentions teamwork? (I didn't look through the entire site to find this.) If you get a small framed item, she can put it on her desk at her new job and when she looks at it, she will think of you.

One option to consider.......giving her a nice card with heartfelt sentiments when she leaves........THEN sending a pretty little bouquet for her desk to the new job the first day/week she's there. That would guarantee her reaching out to you after she's started there & keep the connection going.
Bosses that you really love working for are few & far between - hope you can keep in touch with her as you never know what opportunities there may be in the future to work with her again.

If your boss travels at all, personalized luggage tags are a great gift. Pottery Barn has them as well as many other sites like Things remembered.

If you can upload a photo and give a description of her doing something, we have used www.GiveAcaricature.com for many retirement and going away presents. They can draw your person in a setting described by you and frame it. Sometimes we have had co-workers sign in the matting and it makes for a nice presentation and something they can take with them to their next endeavor.

Does she wear scarves? Maybe a nice scarf. Scarves are almost always a nice gift. If not, then maybe a gift certificate to a nice department store. Does she have any hobbies. If so, perhaps something to do with one of her hobbies. Hope that helps!

How about a very nice pen? I have also done a very nice, tasteful coaster set (if you know her tastes).
