Team Goal-Setting

As admins, our goals are more often that not, what we call "soft goals" which can't necessarily be tied in to specific company goals. I'm in the process of creating goals for my admin team, but I'm struggling with how to weave our soft goals in with company objectives. Have any of you been faced with this challenge? Would appreciate any input you might be able to give. Thanks!

As the Director of Administrative Services, in our company a member of the executive team, I am faced with this challenge yearly. Your success will depend on your organizational structure. In our group, my team is charged with business equipment management, supply management, document process and many other core (or root) business functions that everyone uses daily. At this time we don't consider any of our goals "soft"; at the smallest level timely and accurate distribution of mail effects the bottom line which it a company goal. One example I can give you is this: the company wanted to reduce overhead costs in 2011 by 15% overall. Every department was asked to come up with a plan to lower expenses by a min of 5%. In the admin dept we took this down to the expense line level and challenged everyone to reduce shipping costs, postage, and office supplies by a min of 5%. Focusing eveyone on this resulted in our total department savings of about 12% at the end of the year. The key, after determining the goal, is to communicate how the team is doing every quarter!! If you don't keep the team informed and the goal top of mind it won't work. CMH-AdminProf on 2/17/2012 8:37:07 AM
One goal where I work now is/was to cross train the admins - I say 'was' because it seems to have become a non-goal now - which is sad when you supposedly when you want to be able to minimize the disruption of people being out due to illness, etc. Office Person on 2/9/2012 11:02:20 AM
