Clearly, the bottom line here is you do not trust the person. Therefore, you've already answered yourself....don't join the LinkedIn site soley because other in your office are doing it. Do something that feels right for you!

You can be a member of LinkedIn which I think is a great professional site - just delete her email request, she may remain in your queue but just ignore it. I have had a similar request from a person on Facebook and through LinkedIn, I just ignore it.
